What makes an edge live?
A live edge follows the outside contour of a tree rather than a straight saw cut. Sellers use the phrase in different ways, so the photograph and the maker's description both matter.
Natural edge
The slab keeps the tree's irregular outline. The maker removes bark and finishes the exposed wood; the exact curves and grain change from one slab to another. Ask whether the desk pictured is the one you will receive.
Hand-shaped edge
A maker can cut or shape a straight board to evoke a natural contour. That may suit the room, but it is a different construction. Ask whether the edge follows the tree's original outline or was shaped after cutting.
River and straight-edge designs
An epoxy river joins separated wood edges with resin. A straight-edge top has regular, cut sides. Either can be made from solid wood, yet neither describes the same outline as a retained natural edge.
Questions for the maker
- Is the photographed piece the actual slab or an example?
- What is the minimum usable depth at the front edge?
- Has the edge been stabilised and finished for daily contact?
- Can a monitor arm clamp where you need it?
